U10 Match Report – Cold Conditions, Strong Character and Real Progress

It was a very cold morning this weekend the kind where hands stay tucked into sleeves and warm-ups feel extra important. So first of all, a big thank you to all the parents and players who showed up ready despite the temperature. Your commitment and support on days like this make a real difference to the team.

Youth football always brings emotion, and today was no exception. There were a lot of upset children on both sides at different moments, which is completely normal at this age. Football means a lot to them, and learning how to handle those feelings is part of their development. What mattered most was how our players responded they kept going, kept trying and stayed together as a team.

The match finished in a 4–2 win. Freddy scored twice, with Steven and Gully adding one each. Every goal came from positive play and effort, which is what we encourage week in, week out. While scoring is always nice, what pleased me more was how the goals were created through teamwork, passing and supporting one another.

We made a small change to the way we play today. Trying new ideas is important for development, but it can feel uncomfortable at first. Early on, you could see we struggled against a very good side. They were organised and energetic, which made it difficult for us to settle. At times we looked unsure, and that’s completely natural when players are adapting.

As the match went on, though, the boys began to trust each other more. They started calling for the ball, spreading out and making braver decisions. Instead of rushing, they tried to play their football. That growing confidence made a big difference. The improvement from the early stages to the later parts of the game was clear.

This is what development football is all about. Results are nice, but progress is more important. The biggest reward as a coach is seeing players attempt what we practise in training during a real match. Today, there were several moments where the boys tried to play out from the back, looked for a pass instead of just kicking forward, and supported teammates under pressure. That shows learning and understanding.

Freddy deserves credit not only for his two goals but also for his work rate and attitude. He was also the captain’s pick, which shows the respect his teammates have for him. Leadership at this age often shows through effort and example, and Freddy demonstrated both.

Steven and Gully took their goals well and were lively in attack. It’s great to see different players contributing because it builds confidence across the squad and shows the team is developing options going forward.

Choosing Player of the Match was not easy. For me, it came down to Lucca and Tait. Both have recently started applying more of what we work on in training, and their progress is noticeable. They are listening, trying and improving each week, which is exactly what youth football should encourage.

Lucca showed determination and improving awareness, beginning to read the game better and position himself well. Tait showed bravery and a willingness to get involved even in difficult moments. Both are moving in the right direction, and it’s rewarding to see their effort paying off. They shared Player of the Match because they both earned it.

What stood out most today was the team effort. Everyone contributed in some way whether through tackles, passes, movement or encouragement. Football is a team game, and those details matter just as much as goals.

Resilience was another big positive. When the opposition scored or when things didn’t go our way, the boys didn’t drop their heads. They regrouped and kept working. That mindset will help them both on and off the pitch.

To the parents, thank you again for your support in tough weather. Your encouragement helps more than you know. To the players, well done for your effort, bravery and teamwork. Keep enjoying your football and supporting each other.

There is still plenty to work on, but the signs of progress are clear. If the boys keep training with the same attitude and willingness to learn, the improvement will continue to show.

A good team performance, good football played and valuable lessons learned that’s a successful day for the U10s. 👏

Coach Justin’s Final Word

I want the boys to remember that football is about learning, enjoyment and teamwork first. Wins are great, but development is what lasts. I’m proud of the effort and the bravery to try new things today, especially in tough conditions. If we keep working hard in training and trusting each other in matches, the progress will keep coming. Well done to every player

keep smiling, keep learning and keep loving your football.
